Currency and money exchange
The currency in Sweden is Swedish krona (SEK). Please note that Sweden has yet to ratify the Euro treaty, which means that you can not pay using euro (€) or other currencies than SEK in cash.
Sweden is widely regarded as the most cashless society on the planet. Most of the country’s bank branches have stopped handling cash; many shops, museums and restaurants now only accept plastic or mobile payments. Most terminals in stores are supporting the use of paying with contactless cards.
But no need to worry. Major credit cards (some restrictions may apply to American Express) are widely accepted throughout Sweden at banks, hotels, stores, restaurants, taxis, car rental companies, and for air, ship and rail tickets.

1 Euro is approx. 11,3 SEK and 1 USD is approx. 9,5 SEK as per June 2024.

Normal banking hours are from 10:00 to 16:00 hrs. Monday to Friday. There are several ATMs located in Luleå, for example at the airport. The ATMs accept a variety of international credit cards.

Tips are always included in the prices given in taxis and restaurants in Sweden. Tipping is not expected but appreciated.
